YIS is having a Halloween decoration competition! A student of each grade is appointed by their teachers to lead in the planning of the classroom decorations. Common ideas are decorating doors with halloween symbols like black cats, mummies and bats. Ghouls and pumpkins too, just some ideas for the class interior

The final week of October, the week of Halloween! Halloween falls on 31st October. This celebration can also be called Hallowe’en or All Halloween which means All Hallows’ Eve / All Saints’ Eve. It is held on the eve of Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. Everybody knows that. But did you know that Celts believed Samhain was a time when the wall between our world and the paranormal world was porous and spirits could get through? Because of this belief, it was common for the Celts to wear costumes and masks during the festival to ward off or befuddle any evil spirits. Did you also know the origin of Jack-O-Lanterns? The origin of Jack-O-Lanterns comes from a Celtic folk tale of a stingy farmer named Jack who would constantly play tricks on the devil. The devil responded by forcing him to wander purgatory with only a burning lump of coal from hell. Jack took the coal and made a lantern from a turnip, using it to guide his lost soul. The myth was brought over by Irish families fleeing the potato famine in the 1800s, and since turnips were hard to come by in the U.S., America's pumpkins were used as a substitute to guide lost souls and keep evil spirits like "Jack of the Lantern" away. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” In fact, wiccanwere highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats, on Halloween night. - Melissa Halloween is only a day away, and today the cooking club made 3 dishes out of pumpkins: pumpkin soup, pumpkin cookies, and pumpkin spiced latte. In addition to that, we also judged each dish by four criteria: 1 - difficulty 2 - originality 3 - tastes 4 - pumpkin Judges were: Ibu Fanny, Melissa, Pak Jose, David
The pumpkin soup won at criteria 4. Of the three foods, the presence of pumpkins was more present in the soup. The soup was had good taste, color and consistency. However, it could use a little less chicken spice. The other two dishes: pumpkin spiced latte and pumpkin cookies won in criteria 1, 2, and 3. Concluding these dishes as the winners of the day. The cookies had good softness to it, and was not too sweet. The coffee was subtle, but a good combination to go with the cookies. On the 10th October 2016 Grade 10 class went to Ngoboran Beach for a Spanish class and a field trip as a way of doing a fun activity for reaching the end of term 1. Leaving school at 8:30 we began our trip in the school bus and Allegria's car. The car trip took 1 to 2 hours before we arrived there. The weather was perfect as the sun was out, yet it was not too hot. After spending some time on the shore, we ate some lunch. We had some fresh fish in a small local restaurant just a few steps away from the shore. Some of us also walked to a nearby temple which was an unreal sight to see. As time quickly passed by, it was a good moment to return back to school, where on the way, we had an icecream stop. Last Thursday, the cooking club made some Lasagna.
